Vocational Program: Carroll County

Target's Vocational Program offers three services to assist its clients: Day HabilitationSupported Employment, and
Department of Rehabilitation Services (DORS)
programsEach program provides an individualized and structured approach in assisting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This goal is met through individual and small group activities in areas including education, recreation, and employment and volunteer opportunities within the community.

Day Habilitation Program

The Day Habilitation Program provides individuals the opportunity to explore and practice these concepts by offering a computer lab, a library, an over-sized learning kitchen and classroom space. The center's large multi-purpose room allows individuals the opportunity to work on volunteer community projects in-house and provides space for leisure time activities and training opportunities.

The trainings within the Day Habilitation Program are hands-on and related to life experiences. Training topics include:

Activities of Daily Living:

This area focuses on preparing clients for situations they are likely to encounter in the community and in their daily lives.

  • Community Skills: making new friends, getting along with roommates, in the community, and communicating with supervisors and coworkers
  • Time Management: telling time, learning the importance of managing their time wisely, using a scheduling planner, being punctual, and maintaining good on-the-job attendance
  • Money Management: personal budgeting, banking management, and the importance of savings
  • Hygiene: all aspects of personal hygiene, from both health and socially appropriate perspectives
  • Health and Nutrition: cooking lessons, healthy nutrition instruction, and physical fitness training

  • Math: various levels of math instruction according to individual needs
  • Handwriting: working to improve individual print and cursive writing skills
  • Science: education concentrating on science concepts that includes hands-on experiments

Pre-Vocational Skills:

Client preparation to ensure success in employment and volunteer endeavors in the community.

  • Job Development: employment search, filling out applications, resume writing, and interviewing skills
  • Volunteer Opportunities: provides experiences to increase employability and provides the opportunity for clients to give-back to the community

Supported Employment Program

Target partners with Carroll County businesses to provide competitive, integrated work experiences. Beginning with job development assistance and continuing with job coaching support. We tailor these services to each client's unique needs.

The Supported Employment Program coordinates volunteer placements for clients that not only provide valuable training that improves their employability, but also allows individuals to contribute positively to the community in which they live. Target maintains extensive case management files for each client, ensuring that individual vocational goals are met and provides direct on site client supervision as needed.

Target’s clients work for a variety of local employers including traditional, entry-level positions with retail stores, child care centers, car dealerships, restaurants, professional offices, government agencies, and various private businesses. These employers report that Target’s clients are more reliable when compared to many other workers in showing up on time, working hard and receiving consistent supervision and support.
